Quebec announces financial assistance for Laval University to support a new training program on climate change adaptation

The ministère de l’Environnement et de la Lutte contre les changements climatiques, Mr. Benoit Charette, announced on Wednesday the awarding of financial assistance totaling up to $1,917,959 over four years to Laval University for the development and implementation of a training program on climate change adaptation for professionals in urban planning, architecture, and engineering.

The program’s goal is to bridge the gap between the science of climate change adaptation and the practice of urban planning, architecture, and engineering. By the end of the training, professionals in these three fields will have a better understanding of future climate conditions and their potential impacts on the built environment and living spaces, which will enhance their ability to incorporate solutions into their practices that promote community resilience in the face of climate change.

The training program will be developed by Laval University, in collaboration with the Ouranos research consortium and the three relevant professional associations. Based on a preliminary analysis of the needs of the target professionals, it will include a core curriculum and specialized modules designed to address the various challenges these professionals face. The program, which will be conducted primarily online, will provide practical information on climate change, its impacts in Quebec, analytical and decision-making tools, adaptation solutions, and the role of professionals in adapting to climate change.

The new program will be offered starting in spring 2021.

Quote:

“Our builders must constantly adapt to account for the effects of climate change and the risks it poses to their projects. Having a skilled workforce will enable Quebec—and municipalities in particular—to accelerate the completion of promising projects across all regions.”

Benoit Charette, ministy of the Environment and Fight Against Climate Change

Key point:

This program is jointly funded by the governments of Canada and Quebec. The financial assistance from the Government of Quebec comes from the Green Fund and is provided as part of the implementation of the 2013–2020 Climate Change Action Plan.
